The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Remote sensing of sea-ice thickness is gaining importance in polar climate assessments and operational sea ice forecasting. The evolving observational capability is based on an expanding number of satellite altimeter missions with a variety of altimeter implementations (pulse-limited radar, synthetic aperture radar, and laser altimeter). The main objective of the position is to take advantage of this unprecedented altimeter data coverage of the global sea ice cover and to develop the next generation sea-ice thickness retrieval algorithm for operational and completed satellite missions. Advances in sea-ice thickness remote sensing will result in improved process understanding of sea ice both hemisphere, enable more reliable sea ice forecasts and improve evaluation of numerical sea ice models. Open and free access to remote sensing data sets is our priority and essential for advancing climate research. Therefore, all results will contribute to decadal climate data records generated in collaboration with international colleagues in the ESA Climate Change Initiative sea ice project and the Copernicus Climate Change Services.
