At Synthace we are moving biology away from gruelling and time-consuming manual processes with handheld pipettes and lab books to more reproducible automated experimentation, tracked samples, structured datasets and cutting-edge data analysis!

We are developing our Antha software platform to tackle the biggest challenges faced by the bioprocessing industry, including reproducibility, timelines and data handling.

This takes highly collaborative team effort between software developers, biologists, bioprocess engineers, mathematicians, bioinformaticians, designers and our growing list of industrial partners in the biosciences.

We're currently expanding our team and looking for talented individuals who are like-minded, curious, and want to work on intellectually stimulating or rewarding projects that will make a genuine difference to the world.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

We're looking for a passionate and enthusiastic Downstream Bioprocess Scientist, to join our world-class diverse and interdisciplinary team, and help us achieve our goal of re-defining and revolutionising Biology!

This is a hands-on role in our on-site wet lab. Leveraging your scientific knowledge and experience of designing processes, you will be using Antha and incorporating it into your workflows, enabling end to end automation for high throughput downstream bioprocessing.

You'll be working collaboratively and creatively with a range of stakeholders (in our case this includes software engineers) to use, test, and suggest features/improvements to Antha, delivering even greater value to the wider Antha user base.

Although this isn't a customer facing role, at times you will be expected to advise more outward facing Synthace members and end users on sophisticated workflows and associated scientific challenges, i.e. to digitise biological protocols and processes. Hence, a willingness and ability to communicate effectively in technical and multidisciplinary situations is essential.

Extensive training will be provided and there will be excellent opportunities for you to expand your skill-set and progress organically within the company into senior positions.

This is an office/lab based role but occasionally you may be required to travel to other locations.

ABOUT YOU

You must be able to demonstrate and apply previous hands-on lab based experience. This experience will be crucial in engaging with your future colleagues, i.e. working with them to understand the scientific need and context, in order to enable them to progress the development of our software.

Our core target markets are biologics and gene therapies, so relevant experience in a bioprocess focused role within an industrial context is highly desirable.

In addition, we are really interested in hearing from candidates with a background in PR&D, MSAT (or similar), with expertise in downstream processing and knowledge of whole process challenges (up- and down-stream).

A deep understanding of bioprocess operations, experience with industry practices and the ability to handle and interpret large, complex data sets will be crucial.

Your domain proficiency will play a key part in this role. However, you must also have an entrepreneurial drive to produce high-quality deliverables which will be complemented by your problem solving, critical thinking, adaptability, communication skills and work ethic.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THIS ROLE

Bioprocessing:

  • Industrial downstream bioprocessing experience (PR&D, MSAT or similar);
  • Hands on experience in bioprocessing (DSP and data analysis) working on scale up, scale down, tech transfer and handling large bioprocess relevant data sets;
  • You should also have used one or more of the following (or similar): AKTA (Avant, Prime, Pure, Pilot), RoboColumn, PreDictor plates, multiple resin types (Affinity, IEX, SEC, HIC), Unicorn software, Sartobind, Filtration (Micro-/Ultra-/Nano-/Tangential flow- filtration), Diafiltration, Centrifugation, HPLC;
  • Designing and troubleshooting experiments end to end, including at least some of the following: bind and elute chromatography; flow through chromatography; high throughput process development; UF/DF; TFF; chromatography scale up/scale down; Kp screening; formulation optimisation; primary recovery; centrifugation; viral inactivation; homogenisation; to optimise product development;
  • Experience developing automated lab protocols and processes, including their successful tech transfer i.e. downstream processes, plate based assays, etc. (automation experience greatly preferred);
  • Exceptional data analysis skills - the ability to handle, interpret and discuss large, complex data sets;
  • Deep understanding of bioprocess operations, experience with industry practices.

Technical Lab Experience:

  • You should have at least an awareness of DoE (perhaps using JMP, Design Expert, or MODDE) and preferably used it in this context to design and execute multifactorial experiments;
  • It’s really important that you have an awareness of how and why lab automation might be applied in this context;
  • You must also be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of your own scientific work and broader scientific concepts that relate.

Personal:

  • Have a collaborative approach, always willing to share knowledge and support others;
  • Be able to work independently as well as in teams;
  • Have an inner drive to deliver high quality work;
  • Have excellent organisation and prioritisation skills;
  • You pro-actively seek out resources and solutions when needed;
  • Have solid communication skills, being able to present your work to multi-disciplinary teams - both internally and externally;
  • Have excellent documentation and reporting skills;
  • Be able to persevere when faced with setbacks;
  • Have an entrepreneurial drive to continue learning and adapt to changing business needs in a dynamic environment.

BONUS POINTS IF YOU HAVE

  • Experience with ELISA, qPCR and high throughput analytics;
  • QbD (Quality by Design), QA/QC experience;
  • Prior experience with client-focused support or applications;
  • Project management experience;
  • PhD and/or Post-Doctoral training.

Salary: £40k-£45k depending on experience
