position exists for a Research Associate in Terrestrial Biophysics and Remote Sensing, within Professor CHW Barnes' Research Group. The role is funded by the Universidad Nacional de Cañete (UNDC).
The role holder will contribute to a team investigating environmental factors controlling water quality in Peru's Cañete river system. Quantifiable effects of these factors are yet to be established. The role holder will establish satellite and Ground Truth (GT) baselines and work towards quantifying all endmembers.
The role holder will be responsible for collecting and analysing satellite data; GT satellite data by flying multispectral imaging drones and gathering water-quality and bioindicator data from the river system; conducting statistical analyses, interpreting/cross-correlating GT and satellite data during and between field trips; increasing project research capacity by teaching UNDC stakeholders GT and satellite data collection methods; data archiving and project web presence. The GT work will require off-road driving, long mountain treks and use of specialist equipment at altitudes to ~5000m.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Physics, Engineering or a closely related discipline. They will have experience working with and analysing satellite data, flying drones, gathering water data, analysing contamination sources, a strong data analysis background, skills in advanced statistical analysis, an ability to manage their own workload, clear communication skills and an ability to work closely both with stakeholders and the project team.
The post holder will be located at the Department of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0HE, UK, when not on fieldwork duties in Peru.
